IM Training – Speedy Benefits

Training for long races makes me think of long slow workouts.  Well, I got the shock of my life when I signed up for a local 5K and my average pace per mile was 7:20 and I think I could have run even faster!  I won the race and there was nobody near me to make me push harder.  So this week I had a benchmark run at the track; after a warm-up I ran 1 mile moderately hard, rested, ran 1 mile fast, rested, and ran a mile moderately hard, and cooled down.  My times were 7:18, 6:49, and 7:18.  Now I have always considered 7:18 to be very fast for me, but it felt like a jog in the park.  I think all the biking has made my legs stronger, whatever it is; I’ve got to say that I’m loving the new speed.  Here’s to a faster, stronger, tougher me!
